The it Student Chrome takes the flat 2% gas-and-restaurant rate from the standard it Chrome and opens it up to students with limited or no credit history. You earn 2% at gas stations and restaurants on up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter, 1% on everything else, and Discover matches all of it dollar for dollar at the end of year one with no cap. There is no quarterly activation to track, which matters for a first card, and no annual fee or foreign transaction fee to worry about during a semester abroad. The tradeoff against its rotating sibling, the it Student Cash Back, is the same one adults face on the full-credit line: a flat 2% in two categories versus 5% in categories you have to remember to turn on.
