Best credit cards for the travel

Travel cards earn their fee through redemptions, not statement credits dressed up as benefits. The right travel card for most people earns at a meaningful multiple on travel and dining, charges no foreign transaction fee, and includes either a useful lounge network or substantive travel insurance — not both, unless you really fly a lot.

What we look for

  • No foreign transaction fee. This is non-negotiable for anything you'd actually carry abroad.
  • Bonus earning on travel and/or dining, ideally at 2× or higher.
  • Either lounge access OR baseline travel insurance (trip cancellation, baggage, rental CDW).

What to watch for

  • 'Travel credits' on premium cards are usually narrow and easy to lose. Look at the math without the credits before factoring them in.
  • Cobrand airline cards earn well on that one airline but lose flexibility. Transferable-points cards (Chase UR, Amex MR, Capital One Miles) usually win for most people.
